Dr Mike Short CBE named Chairman as AWTG targets expansion

AWTG has appointed Dr. Mike Short CBE as its new Chairman.

Dr. Mike Short brings extensive experience in telecommunications and satellite communications to the role, following a long career in research and innovation. He most recently served as Chief Architect at the Satellite Applications Catapult and is a Distinguished Visitor at the National Physical Labouratory (NPL).

He continues to be engaged in the convergence of mobile and satellite networks, supporting sector development through the introduction of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum solutions. Dr. Short also chairs the advisory boards for the UK Telecomms Labs on behalf of NPL and the UK Telecomms Innovation Network, and is currently a Visiting Professor at both University College London and the University of Surrey.

Dr. Short's previous leadership roles include his tenure as elected Chairman of the Global GSM Association (GSMA) and as President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). He was awarded a CBE in 2012 for his services to the telecommunications industry.

Abbey Alidoosti, Chief Executive Officer of AWTG, welcomed the appointment as a significant development for the company.

"Mike's appointment as Charmain is a pivotal moment for AWTG, Mike has 30 years' experience working in Mobile Communications networks, most of which he spent as a Director/Vice President in telecommunications with Telefonica Europe and its prior owners. He subsequently worked in the Department of International Trade (DIT) from November 2017 – March 2023 as the Department's first Chief Scientific Adviser (Dept of Business and Trade since February 2023).

Dr. Short's addition comprises part of an ongoing transition within AWTG's leadership. The company also announced the departure of Tony Sceales, who steps down as Non-Executive Chairman after three and a half years.

The company acknowledged Mr. Sceales' contributions over his tenure, highlighting his leadership and dedication in shaping the firm's direction. According to the statement from AWTG, "Tony's thoughtful leadership, collaborative spirit, and dedication have played an important role in shaping our journey. We are deeply grateful for the integrity and clarity. We extend our sincere thanks to Tony for his invaluable contributions and wish him continued success in his future endeavours."

Dr. Short's appointment comes at a period of ongoing change and growth within the telecommunications industry, with AWTG focusing on expanding its activity in digital transformation and next-generation communication infrastructure across multiple sectors.
