Hetzner unveils new scalable S3-compatible object storage

Mon, 9th Dec 2024

Hetzner has introduced a new object storage service designed to manage data efficiently and flexibly.

The German hosting and cloud provider Hetzner announced the addition of Object Storage to its service offerings. This new product is a scalable and S3-compatible solution intended for the storage of unstructured data. With its flexible, cost-efficient, and secure standards, it aims to support data-intensive applications.

Object Storage differentiates itself from traditional storage technologies, which typically utilise block or file systems, by organising data into objects. Each object includes not only the data itself but also specific metadata and a unique identifier. This structuring allows for quick and accurate data searches and improves the management efficiency of large data volumes, supporting optimal scalability.

Data in object storage can be managed in 'buckets', allowing it to be stored and accessed in a high-performance and separated manner. The solution is particularly suited to various use cases, including data backup, restoration, archiving, big data analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT) data management.

Hetzner's Object Storage is offered at a monthly base price of EUR €4.99, equivalent to USD $5.99, which covers 1 TB of storage and 1 TB of egress traffic. Any additional usage is subject to a pay-as-you-go pricing model, costing EUR €0.0067 per TB-hour or USD $0.0080 for storage space and EUR €1.00 per TB or USD $1.20 for additional outgoing traffic.

The new service complies with the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and stores data within Hetzner's data centres located in Falkenstein, Nuremberg, or Helsinki.
