Targa Telematics links OEM data to Motability fleet
Targa Telematics has agreed a partnership with Motability Operations that will feed vehicle data from car manufacturers into Motability Operations' IT systems.
The companies said the integration will use original equipment manufacturer data from connected vehicles on the Motability Scheme. Motability Operations runs the scheme, which provides leased vehicles to disabled people in exchange for an enhanced mobility allowance.
The project centres on vehicle maintenance and monitoring. The firms said it will generate insights on vehicle health and maintenance compliance. They also highlighted breakdown prevention and fleet safety as intended outcomes.
OEM data
Targa Telematics said it will collect and standardise data from different vehicle manufacturers. It will then convert it into operational insights for Motability Operations. The company said it can ingest a wide range of OEM data regardless of vehicle make or model.
The companies linked the work to day-to-day fleet operations. They said Motability Operations will monitor vehicle health more proactively. They cited a lower risk of breakdowns and vehicle off-road incidents. They also pointed to safety and security improvements.
Motability Operations said it will keep control of vehicle registrations. Targa Telematics said its services will focus on productivity and efficiency across fleet management operations.
Phased rollout
Targa Telematics said the integration will roll out in phases across the Motability Operations fleet. The companies said they plan to extend coverage progressively to all vehicles on the scheme.
The announcement positions the work as a large-scale deployment of OEM data. Targa Telematics said it has used OEM vehicle data since 2017, and it has worked with businesses on converting embedded telematics inputs into operational insights.
The partnership also sits within a broader shift in fleet management towards direct use of connected-car data from manufacturers. Fleets have historically relied on aftermarket telematics devices for diagnostics and location-based services. OEM data access has expanded in recent years through manufacturer platforms and third-party aggregators.
Motability Operations said the scheme includes insurance, breakdown cover, tyres and servicing. The company also said it negotiates with vehicle manufacturers and partners on pricing and choice.
Chris Horbowyj, UK Commercial Director, Targa Telematics, described the partnership as part of scaling up practical use of vehicle manufacturer data.
"We are delighted to partner with Motability Operations, as it marks an important step in the practical use of OEM data at scale. Our role is to ensure that data from different vehicle manufacturers can be collected, standardised, and converted into actionable insights in a way that supports Motability Operations' day-to-day work and, most importantly, enhances the experience and safety of the customers they serve. We believe this Partnership will drive efficiency, safety, and data reliability, benefiting Motability Operations and advancing our goal of creating a stronger foundation for future connected vehicle services," said Chris Horbowyj, UK Commercial Director, Targa Telematics.
Motability Operations linked vehicle dependability to independence for disabled customers using the scheme.
"The Motability Scheme exists to enable independence for disabled people, providing access to safe, reliable and affordable mobility that helps customers stay connected," said Andy Broadfield, Managing Director of Electric & Insurance, Motability Operations. "A dependable vehicle is central to that independence. This partnership with Targa Telematics supports our simple model by helping us use vehicle data to better monitor vehicle health, reduce the risk of breakdowns and maintain high standards of safety and compliance. By taking a more proactive approach to vehicle maintenance, we can give customers greater confidence in the vehicles they rely on and help to deliver value through the Motability Scheme."
Targa Telematics operates across several European markets and in Chile. It is part of the Viasat Group. The company provides telematics and fleet-related services across sectors, including vehicle rental, finance and large fleet operations.
Motability Operations said the Motability Foundation oversees the Motability Scheme. It said the scheme supports tens of thousands of jobs across the UK through its supplier and partner network. The companies stated that the data integration will extend across the fleet as the phased deployment progresses.
