Telecoms to earn USD $111 billion from APIs by 2027 says study
According to a new study by Juniper Research, telecommunications operators are poised to see a significant rise in revenue from telecommunications APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). The study projects that global operator revenue from these APIs will surge from USD $50 billion in 2024 to over USD $111 billion by 2027. Telecommunications APIs enable operators to integrate network capabilities and services into single applications, offering an avenue to monetise their 5G networks.
The comprehensive study delved into several potential use cases within the telecommunications API market, including connectivity, communications, and fraud mitigation. One of the key findings is that operators will have to maximise their exposure to these APIs to capitalise on the anticipated revenue growth.
The report highlighted network connectivity APIs as a significant revenue driver, expected to account for over 20% of global operator API revenue by 2027. These APIs, which include functionalities like network slicing, ensure enterprises receive acceptable network conditions, such as high throughput and low latency. The research forecasts that these APIs will generate USD $72 billion for operators over the coming four years.
However, the study also noted that network connectivity APIs are resource-intensive, necessitating real-time adjustments of network functionalities. While operators can command a higher fee per API call for these sophisticated use cases, they will also face challenges in scaling these APIs to meet growing demand.
Research author Molly Gatford commented, "To accomplish both exposure and scalability, networks must employ various technologies, including cloud computing, network function virtualisation, and open radio access technologies, to be able to meet the demands from enterprises for network connectivity."
The research suite offers an exhaustive assessment of the Telecommunications API market, encompassing market analysis and detailed forecasts for 60 countries. The dataset includes over 17,500 market statistics spanning a five-year period and features two Competitor Leaderboards as well as an examination of current and future market opportunities.
