Vaisala launches datacentre care service for sensors

Vaisala has launched a datacentre service portfolio called Vaisala Care for Data Centres, aimed at operators managing large fleets of measurement instruments.

The portfolio brings together calibration, expert support, replacement probe pools, documentation and on-site service options in a package tailored to datacentre environments. It targets hyperscale, colocation and enterprise facilities, where operators may oversee hundreds of instruments at a single site.

Datacentre operators rely on temperature, humidity and other environmental measurements to manage cooling systems and maintain stable operating conditions. As facilities expand to support growth in AI workloads, cloud infrastructure and digital services, the number of instruments in use can rise sharply, increasing the burden of calibration, verification and record-keeping.

That has made measurement accuracy a broader operational issue for the sector. Small deviations in readings can affect cooling efficiency, create equipment risks and disrupt service continuity, particularly at large sites where maintenance must be carefully coordinated to avoid unnecessary interruption.

Vaisala's new portfolio is structured around three service tiers: Vaisala Care, Vaisala Care+ and Vaisala Commissioning Care. Services include accredited calibration, verification, replacement probes, technical support, and commissioning-stage calibration and handover documentation for new facilities.

The model is intended to support measurement systems throughout their lifecycle rather than treat service work as a series of one-off tasks on individual devices. Agreed verification scopes may also include selected third-party measurement devices, subject to approval, allowing operators to consolidate oversight of instruments from more than one supplier.

Operational focus

The service concept is aligned with Vaisala's measurement product ranges, including Indigo, Origo and its compact probe lines. Pre-calibrated probes can be swapped in place of installed units, reducing maintenance time in live datacentre environments where operators seek to avoid disruption to running systems.

The portfolio includes remote and on-site service options, giving operators a choice in how maintenance and verification work is carried out. For new datacentres, the commissioning service is intended to provide calibration records and handover documents when a facility enters service.

For operators, the issue is not only whether an individual instrument is working, but whether a broad network of sensors continues to deliver readings that can be trusted over time. In large facilities, that challenge can extend across multiple halls, cooling zones and maintenance schedules, making documentation and service planning as important as the physical calibration work itself.

Jonatan Hongisto, Director of Industrial Measurements' Service Portfolio at Vaisala, linked the offer to the operational pressures facing datacentre managers. "The datacentre world runs on uptime. Even a minor measurement drift in humidity or temperature can cascade into cooling failures, hardware damage, or downtime. The cost of getting it wrong can be significant," Hongisto said.

Vaisala is positioning the service around the idea that accurate measurement underpins several key datacentre priorities, including uptime, cooling performance, energy efficiency and service levels. By grouping support services together, it aims to address the complexity of monitoring large estates of sensors rather than focusing only on isolated instruments.

Lifecycle support

The launch also reflects a wider shift in industrial and infrastructure service models, with vendors increasingly packaging calibration, maintenance and documentation into longer-term support arrangements. In datacentres, where uptime targets are strict and operating conditions are closely managed, this type of structured service approach can be easier to integrate into routine maintenance planning.

Hongisto said growing facilities are making it harder for operators to maintain consistency across their installed base. "As facilities grow, operators need a structured way to manage measurement performance and lifecycle support across hundreds of instruments. Accurate measurements are business-critical, but maintaining them consistently over time has become increasingly difficult as datacentres grow in size and complexity," he said.

Vaisala, which has more than 2,500 employees, is best known for measurement instruments used in industrial and environmental applications. Its move into a dedicated datacentre service portfolio suggests it sees a growing market in the operational support layer around those devices as operators scale sites and seek tighter control over environmental performance.

The portfolio marks a shift towards a longer-term service relationship with customers rather than individual service transactions. "We're moving beyond individual service transactions toward a long-term partnership in helping customers maintain measurement performance," Hongisto said. "The goal is to help customers maintain confidence in their measurements while supporting cooling performance, operational reliability and uptime of their facilities."
