Vodafone celebrates connecting 200 millionth IoT device
Vodafone has announced the connection of its 200 millionth Internet of Things (IoT) device, marking a significant development in its global IoT network.
The latest addition, a healthcare monitor, is part of a range of devices that contribute to public safety, environmental monitoring, and healthcare. Vodafone's IoT technology facilitates remote monitoring by providing healthcare professionals with vital data on patient cardiac health and other vital signs. Vodafone's first IoT device, connected in 2009, was an in-car navigation unit.
Over the past five years, Vodafone has seen a substantial increase in IoT connections, doubling the total to surpass 200 million. More than 25% of these connections are based in Germany. The rise is attributed to investments in digital technology by organisations seeking increased productivity and robust supply chains. Vodafone's IoT is employed in various sectors, including the mining industry in South Africa, where it tracks coal movement, and in Europe, for water leak and forest fire monitoring.
IoT technology offers environmental benefits, with Vodafone estimating that over 50% of its IoT connections help reduce emissions. These devices allow for the monitoring of energy use in national grids, smart buildings, and traffic management.
Marika Auramo, CEO of Vodafone Business, commented: "This major milestone underlines the critical role Vodafone's global IoT network plays in supporting many thousands of businesses and public sector organisations in more than 180 countries. Whether it's connecting smart sensors or industrial robots, our digital network infrastructure is transforming lives and powering economies."
Erik Brenneis, CEO of Vodafone IoT, added: "Reaching and surpassing the 200 millionth IoT connection is a huge moment in our history, and reflects the dedication, innovation and spirit of our team. As a global leader in managed IoT – where we do everything to connect anything – we will continue to push the boundaries to further improve lives and businesses. This milestone is just the beginning of our hyperscale journey, and I'm sure we'll be celebrating many more moments like this in years to come."
The integration of connected devices is becoming more prevalent as IoT service adoption rises. This facilitates the Economy of Things, where devices communicate and engage in transactions with one another.
Vodafone is advancing IoT deployment by incorporating its IoT SIM, or iSIM, directly into device chipsets at the manufacturing stage. This advancement reduces costs and simplifies network service deployment, making it ideal for large-scale IoT applications such as parcel tracking and energy management solutions. Vodafone's global SIMs offer customers worldwide connectivity that is secure and reliable.
Vodafone's influential role in the IoT landscape has been recognised, securing a Leader position in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Managed IoT Connectivity Services for the 11th consecutive year.
