MicroCare leader named Vice Chair of TIA fibre group
Tyler Vander Ploeg, a Key Account Manager at MicroCare, has been elected Vice Chair of the Telecommunications Industry Association's (TIA) Fibre Optics Technology Consortium.
The consortium is a TIA-affiliated industry group focused on fibre-optic education and collaboration. Vander Ploeg's appointment comes as the consortium enters its 32nd year.
Industry group
The Fibre Optics Technology Consortium brings together representatives from optical fibre, cable, connectivity and test-equipment manufacturers, as well as other industry stakeholders. It describes itself as a vendor-neutral resource for the sector.
The group produces educational materials and technical guidance for professionals working with fibre-optic communications, including webinars, white papers and technical presentations. It also offers standards guidance aimed at increasing understanding and adoption of fibre-optic communications.
Optical fibre plays a central role across telecoms networks, data centres and enterprise environments. As demand grows for higher bandwidth and lower latency connections, fibre deployment and maintenance have gained prominence, along with practices such as inspection, cleaning and verification of fibre connections during network build-outs.
Vice chair role
As Vice Chair, Vander Ploeg will work with consortium leadership on its educational agenda, covering the technical advantages of optical fibre and its practical applications in enterprise and network environments.
"I'm honored to serve as Vice Chair of the FOTC during such a pivotal time for fiber-optic communications. Education and collaboration are essential to helping the industry fully realize the value of optical fiber," Vander Ploeg said.
Career background
Vander Ploeg has worked in the fibre-optic sector for nearly 25 years. He previously spent a decade in product management at VIAVI Solutions, where he led the development of fibre-optic inspection technologies.
He has spent the past three years at MicroCare, supporting customers across North America with Sticklers fibre-optic cleaning products. He holds a business administration degree from Seattle Pacific University and an RCDD certification.
MicroCare manufactures Sticklers-branded fibre-optic cleaning solutions and supplies tools used for cleaning fibre connections in data centres, telecoms networks and enterprise IT estates.
Cleaning and inspection are widely used during fibre installation and ongoing maintenance. Contamination on fibre end faces can affect signal transmission and add troubleshooting time during commissioning and fault resolution. Industry groups such as the Fibre Optics Technology Consortium typically address these issues through training, standards awareness and broader coverage of fibre cabling and connectivity.
Company reaction
"Tyler's election reflects his deep technical knowledge, industry credibility, and commitment to education. We're proud to see him represent both MicroCare and the broader fiber-optic community in this leadership role," said Tom Tattersall, CEO of MicroCare.
Vander Ploeg will continue his role at MicroCare alongside his consortium responsibilities. His work with the TIA group will include advocacy around education, standards awareness and industry collaboration.
The Fibre Optics Technology Consortium is expected to continue its programme of webinars, papers and technical presentations in the coming year, as members address deployment practices and operational issues across fibre networks.
