Hybrid Connex trial shows promise for NHS connectivity boost

A recent pilot study led by the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) has demonstrated the potential for significant advancements in NHS connectivity through the use of Hybrid Connex technology.

Developed by Excelerate Technology, this connectivity solution has showcased how cost-effective improvements in NHS network services can be adopted promptly, enhancing patient care and staff operations.

The technology, part of a €5.7 million European Space Agency-funded research and development programme, utilises a combination of 4G, 5G, and satellite connections. It was designed to provide robust connectivity for ambulance crews in areas where traditional cellular connectivity has been inadequate. The pilot study results are timely, given the ongoing uncertainties surrounding the implementation of the Emergency Services Network (ESN), which relies solely on 4G technology.

During the trial, paramedic crews at EEAST experienced nearly constant connectivity in challenging areas. Cellular connections were employed in 88% of jobs in previously low or no-coverage zones, with connection availability reaching 93% overall. Satellite connectivity was used in 47% of those jobs, often bonded with cellular to enhance internet speeds.

The improvement in connectivity is expected to complement the next phase of the Ambulance Radio Programme (ARP) rollout, boosting the range and quality of healthcare services available from ambulance crews. The technology facilitates immediate access to electronic patient records, enhances telemedicine capabilities, and supports real-time communication with specialists during patient transport.

Bethan Evans, chief operating officer at Excelerate Technology, noted: “The Hybrid Connex technology bonds clever software, cutting-edge hardware and cellular and satellite services into one package combining seamless 4G, 5G, and satellite connections that ensure ambulance crews get a fast, resilient connectivity solution and are seldom offline. The hardware is unobtrusive and the technical fit-out can be done in a day, meaning the vehicle doesn’t need to be off-line for long."

The trial also highlighted the potential for reducing unnecessary hospital conveyance, a priority for the NHS. Tristan Wood, managing director of Livewire Digital, the developers of the RazorLink SD-WAN technology that integrates these connections, emphasised the importance of consistent connectivity in emergency scenarios, stating: “The ability to have and maintain a robust, seamless connection, capable of managing all content including live video is becoming increasingly important across industries, not least in healthcare where minutes and even seconds are critical."

During the trial, four vehicles from EEAST were equipped with Hybrid Connex technology. Apple iPads were configured to automatically connect to the vehicles' Wi-Fi bubbles, achieving a connectivity success rate of 99%. This high level of connectivity allowed crews to access critical data and communication tools even in remote locations.

A paramedic involved in the trial shared their experience: “There was very stable Wi-Fi in the middle of nowhere, achieving 150Mbps download. I conducted a Teams meeting in the passenger seat with excellent clarity and connection stability.”

Philip Elvidge, electronic patient care records lead at EEAST, outlined the clinical benefits, explaining: “With Hybrid Connex we have been able to access the Summary Care Records and National Record Locator consistently, which gives staff access to patients’ End of Life and Mental Health Plans, giving access to key information any time of the day to help us make the right clinical decisions."

As NHS organisations continue to explore technological innovations to improve patient care, the successful trial of Hybrid Connex at EEAST underscores the potential for advanced connectivity solutions to enhance frontline medical services.
